This turned into an inverted companion to #7, The Tree & the Maiden. Both pieces are pseudo-pagan storytelling as they are built around aspects of feminine spirituality and its generally potent connection with the realm of Nature. Whereas #7 was inspired by a fantastical, almost supernatural interaction between a Tree (arguably the oldest and most powerful of Earth Elementals) and a young maiden, this piece alludes to the captivating and often sexy mythology built up around the notion of "the farmer's daughter." Here, however, the Farmer has been traded in for a Cosmographer: a scientist specializing in understanding and describing the nature of the universe, often through the creation of maps and the study of the size and geometry of the universe and changes in those within cosmic time. Exactly how the daughter of such a scientist would behave or what her own personal world-view would be, I have no idea, but pondering this is the inspiration: there is mystery, flirtation and temptation in this piece.

Musical Details:

Musically, this is in fact the companion of #6, Purgatory: it continues to explore straight-up blues riffs on the Taimu. These
are less fiery and more earthy than the riffs in #6, and it serves to bridge the first two blues mukyoku, #6 and #10, to the final mukyoku blues opus, #27, Shakthamunki. The use of Tsu-chu-meri alters the tonal center for sections of this piece and adds a technical and melodic challenge.
